Tapestries are a form of a textile woven on vertical looms; some are woven on floor laying looms. Warp is running the length of the tapestry and the weft is passed back and forth across the warp. Tapestries are a weft faced weaving. The warps are usually linen or cotton and the weft are wool, cotton or can include silk, gold and silver. Tapestries were woven for Kings and nobleman that could roll them up and transport them if moving. They were hung in churches for special occasions. They were also hung in castles for insulation during winter and decorative display. Most display symbolic, emblems, coat of arms, religious, mythological and or hunting scenes. “European Tapestries” such as “Flemish Tapestries” of 16th and 17th century & “French Tapestries” are among the most sought after Tapestries.

History of tapestries
Samples of greek tapestry have been found preserved in the tarim basin dating from the 3rd Century B.C. They reached a new stage in Europe around14th century A.D. around Germany and Switerland. Over time it expanded to France and Netherlands. The tools have remained the same over the years. William Morris resurrected the art of tapestry weaving around the 19th century of tapestry woven for homes. In these early tapestries, isolated figures or compact groups stood out against a background that was generally plain or embellished with plant motifs or flowers, those are called tapestries (thousand flowers). Tapestry became beside painting, sculpture and architectures one of the major visual art forms.

Tapestry became as well more complex, depicting crowded battle scenes or large groups of figures arranged in tiers under architectural constructions. Later in the 16th century, patrons chose to depict one or another of their favorite pastimes: the hunt, peasants at work and play (often themselves in disguise). Then came fashionable verdure’s, pastoral landscapes in which their estates were often depicted.
